I'm not altogether sure that "general chit chat" is the correct category to be posting feedback/what-have-you, but since I can't make up my mind, General Chit Chat it is.
I've been reading your story on Schlexy Schlims (as I call it) and enjoyed it immensely. Almost by accident, I happened upon your posting here. I have to confess, I was always rather fascinated by your avatar...that brooding man!
When I came across these pages, I had to bite (in your words--"not much"). I've decided I'm smitten with Reno--between your portrayal and moody/androgynous/really hot "looks". I even made a Reno desktop, which is both amusing and appalling because I'm not a kid...I have two kids, ages 26 and 24 (okay, so I had them in my really early 20's) but still, do the math! Oh God, I amuse myself with my own weirdness sometimes.
I admire that you've been writing. I am in angst over the fact that I haven't sat down and roughed out "the book" I've been mulling over for years now.
I'm a veterinary technician (hence the feline references) and have wanted to put together a book based on my many, lengthy blogs, vignettes of the clients and patients I've met, the funny and sometimes tragic adventures behind the scenes, along with some of my own sage observations and lessons learned from working with cats, dogs, and the students I worked with when I taught veterinary technology for three years.
So far, it just hasn't happened.
Thus, I applaud you for your efforts and what they give to the people who read them (myself included, of course).
You're certainly a witty woman, this I can surmise from some of your little quips--kind of a shame we're on opposite ends of the world. I live in Portland, Oregon. I bet we'd make good friends.
Then again, what do I know?
I think our written selves would make good friends, anyway.
Gen Chit is just fine. I'm pedantic and scary, but I'm not *that* bad. ;-) Most days, anyway.
Thankyou for your comment on ACTF; I'm glad you like it. Do you find Isy as annoying as I do lately? Some days I just want to smack her upside the head. *grin*
How hard is it not to be smitten with Reno, though? It's too difficult, so I just decided to go with it... even though I'm not a kid either... although my eldest is almost 17 (I was a young-20s mum as well).
And, hey, I'm not going to poke fun at you for making a Reno desktop: I have one I made myself on my laptop. It's posted at Deviant Art, if you want to see it:
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/52250595/
My laptop usually has pics for whatever I'm writing on it; visuals always good.
My mainframe computer currently has a Batman Begins Christian Bale pic on it. *shrugs* I got tired of the unicorns. Tomorrow, I might put up a mountain scene.
As for you, young lady, I think it may be time to stop mulling and start writing, ne? Your idea sounds like it'd be a great book -- I'd read it. These things only happen if you put actual pen to paper, though. Yes, I know you know. But sometimes a wee bit of nagging helps. So consider yourself nagged. :-D
Funny co-incidence, maybe, the very first work experience I did was at a vet's down the road from where I lived (actually, that surgery burned down in the Canberra fires a couple of years ago. Very sad). Thing is, I had to be involved in putting down a horse and that turned me off vet medicine for ever, as I didn't cope very well (horses are my first love). I mean, now I can shoot one if it's necessary, but as a 15 year-old, not so much. And my maths scores kinda sucked.
Anyhooo... thankyou for your comments, I really do appreciate them. And you're probably right, Oregon aside.
...maybe if I don't get around to penning my book, I can just dictate it from my death-bed...you know...how they do in the movies. Of course, if one is long-winded enough to spout off a whole novel while in the throes of dying, maybe it's not dying, really.
I love your desktop on deviantart. The whole FFIV movie had just breathtaking graphics; the faces in particular. I didn't get around to seeing Advent Children until just last night. I'd never have kept such a keen eye out for Reno had you not written about him. I do hope you can update soon. Listen to all of us, crowing for more!
Which leads me to ACTF...Isy's okay. You know, she's just got some heavy Freudian stuff going on. And hell, what would my attitude be like if I'd seen the likes of what that woman's witnessed...and besides...if she got all soft and gooey, that would pretty much find her barefoot and preggers and that's no way for a heroine to be if she's got so much business to be done!
*sigh* You realize you may now find yourself being mewled at to make a Reno Sim and post a story about him on SS...but oh, I don't know...he's really too precious, though, isn't he?
Hmm. I can, in fact, spell "Cecilia". Sorry, that's what I get for posting in a hurry. :-D
I giggled at the thought of giving a whole novel from one's death bed. 'Cos you know you'd have to hang around for the many different drafts too. So, yeah, you'd recover, just to get the damned book finished. ;-)
Oh, and I'm already being, erhm... "asked" to do the Reno sim in a story. Have you seen "Final Fantasies" on SXS2 yet? *grins*
Reno in the real... hmmm... you'll like the AU story I've written for posting when this one's done, then. ;-)
A frightening revelation--well, revealed itself as I glanced over at the desktop wallpaper...at dashing Reno...and it dawned on me that I have a thing for androgynous men. Must be the fine features or something. I caught myself wondering if I was latently gay...(and I mean LATENT...homegirl has always liked the XY species). This goes all the way back to my young days and I was kind of besotted with David Bowie. Oh my...the hair...but Reno is hella cuter.
*amused that you removed the other 2 posts* I do get them emailed to me, you know. ;-)
I was also a fan of Bowie, more his music than him, though. I guess I don't actually have a "type" - It's more Reno's character than how he looks, although I do like his looks Humn *grin* But I would also list Christian Bale, Gerard Butler and Jo Fiennes among my favourite "lookers" (but mostly for their voices. OMG, their voices).
Nothing wrong with pretty boys at all -- but I may be blind as a batter but I don't find Reno androgynous. *shrugs* Boy George and Michael Jackson, yes. Reno and Vinnie, not so much. They're just pretty (and in Vinnie's case, too freakin' emo for words), but they still act like blokes, IMO. :-)
Mind you, I am a fan of chest hair. Mmm. Chest hair. ;-)
Strangely enough, now that I thnk about it, most (all but one, in fact) of the bi or lesbian friends I have seem to prefer women whose features would be, I suppose, considered more masculine (although I've never really looked at anyone's face as either feminine or masculine. They just are). Being a definite fan of the XY myself, it's never occured to me to ask any of them if that's considered normal or just their personal preference. But then, I don't tend to quiz any of my friends on their choices anyways, no matter what they are. *grin*
I won't respond to the other 2 comments 'cos I figure you removed them for a reason. I'm a dork, too though. ;-)
Other comments...second was me saying I am a dork...first was a comment about how many "final fantasies" there. It gives me giggles because of something I discovered when I was young--and pretty. Men (guys, whatever) get uh, erections, as it were, and when under the influence of said, act as though it's the very last one they'll ever have. Like this is their final chance before leaving this plane of existence. Again, and again and again! (I actually wrote an article of sorts about this ;o) You're right! Not androgynous--pretty. Look, I don't want anyone to get me wrong here; straight, gay, bi...who cares? I am SO glad things are better than they were 20 years ago. My slightly horrified response had more to do with how depressing it would be to find out I'd been chasing after the wrong gender--er, happiness for most of my life. Damn, no wonder they didn't work out! So now that I am reassured that all of those romantic debacles, failures, adventures, and what-have-you were "meant to be", I will sleep easy tonight! Oh, and news flash! I have made a Reno sim. I will admit, I downloaded one from MTS2, and worked on the face. Now, if only the hair weren't so wonky! There's one mesh up there that is the wrong style, but the texture and detail is very nice. The other one...oh, I'd love to work on it but I don't know how to mesh...dammit. So I have one of Louis' hairdos on him. He's still cute. =0) Now for Cecilia's snotty remark of the day: I went to SS2 to lurk, and see what's new in storyland...and you know what? I just can't read stuff when the grammar and spelling are atrocious. Naw, I am not talking about typos. It's like trying to look at the Mona Lisa with a strand of spaghetti hanging from her bottom lip. Oh, and ya know what else? I'll take you up on that private email sometime. You're cool and so am I, so I believe that's a good reason to send a PM ;oD
PS: I REALLY hope no one from SS2 stumbles on to the snitty comment above...and get all flusterpated. Of course, I could argue that a little proofreading never hurts (and heaven knows I'm not perfect...close, but not quite! heheheh
>> Men (guys, whatever) get uh, erections, as it were, and when under the influence of said, act as though it's the very last one they'll ever have. Like this is their final chance before leaving this plane of existence. Again, and again and again!
OMG, that cracked me up. I was going to write a short, "that's a bit harsh" statement, you know, 'cos I have many guy friends I love to death, but then realised that I coudn't actually do that with a straight face.
In fact, they'd probably agree with you.
My Reno sim -- fixed from the downloaded one, too (Nessy's, I think), and with some changes to the uniform (the shoes were the wrong colour, his are grey, Rude's are black), and with the ear-ring, is playing happily in my "Writing a Sims Story" article on the BethBlog, if you want to have a look-see. I changed the hair slightly, lightened it. I do have plans to make a non-gappy hair mesh one day--Plicka's was good, but she forgot that one detail, not to complain, she did warn of that on the thread, but it's worse than the picture she showed.
I actually tried to fix her mesh a few months ago, (with her permission), but she'd made it in such a way as to render that an impossibility using Milkshape. It wouldn't even load up.
So, when I get around to finding $25US to throw at registering my MS copy, I'll have another go at one from scratch. Hysterical Paroxysm (who I credit for the "Sexy Natural Bounce" on my avatar-- we were talking hair meshes) spent a lot of time explaining meshing & animating details to me, I think I owe her, if no one else *grin*
Someone on Insim made anoter version, clothes are a better texture (although Plicka's mesh is better), and they used a Kavar hair on him to make him look like he did during BC (short, in other words).
As for the stories, well, everyone who writes needs a good edit. Me, included. I still cringe at the first parts of ACTF, now, because I've got a better handle on the story and characters now and my writing's improved in the last 6 months, thank god.
I have not read your fic yet, though having now read a significant chunk of your FAQ, I am definitely interested in doing so. I actually got linked here while trying yet again to puzzle how old Reno is supposed to be. I had originally put him at 25-26ish in the original game, which means 19-20 in BC, which is... impressive? Haha. Your timeline makes more sense. Then again Rufus is 15 in BC and that's just mind-boggling. But I digress.
I wanted to say thank you for that nicely thought out commentary on Reno's age. I think it makes a lot of sense, especially given my repeated assertion that everybody got younger in Advent Children. Needless to say, I had not envisioned Cloud as looking 16. Many of the portrayals are oddly youngish even given the way Japanese people age (which I now am able to see better than most Americans given extensive staring at Tenimyu actors a few years ago. Please no comments on that. Though the age-guessing game aspect ended up being quite informative overall).
On a somewhat random note, my own suspicion about Rude's name is that it was a somewhat misspelled attempt at Ruud, which is actually a name.
And now I really must read this story of yours, because Reno was my favorite character back when I was first playing the game, and has never quite been knocked out of that position. (...we will ignore my recent fascination with Rufus...) I have always wanted more background on this wonderful guy, and I am quite anxious to see what you've done with him.
Funny, I've never really looked into Rufus' age, but him being 15 would explain his snitty stupidity.
Don't get me wrong. I've had 2 15yos so far, and when they are fantastic, they are fantastic. But raised on Machiavelli, as Rufus probably was (or, y'know, the Planet equivalent. You know what I mean *grin*), it explains a lot.
Cos a 15yo gone bad is just.... awful.
I have him a bit older, though, I think. My bad hehe.
Eh, he seems older anyway. It's not too hard to make him sound more like a 15 year old in fic without actually breaking character, but he really doesn't in the scripts I've read.
But yeah, he's 21 in the original game, and BC is six years prior, so 15. I had to do that calculation about ten times before I decided I hadn't done something wrong.
He is, needless to say, a very, very twisted child.
Framming blogger isn't mailing comments to me, by the looks.
I'm fairly sure that they forgot to take age into a/c when doing BC, except for the main Av chars, Cloud and the like. I'm going to shut my ears and go *lalalala* and say I read Rufus' age as 17 at the start of BC (cos I have horrible maths skills). You will see why as the story goes on.
Of course, that is actually what I have him as, but unless I want to do substantial rewrite of some later chapters and some clues already embedded in the story (Chs 16 and now 21) even my pedantic self will have to let this one go. And I'm too lazy, so...
Right. Well. Wasn't he supposed to be 17 all along then? >.>
I can stick to that story.
Also, Rufus/Reno fic I'm working on is including a throwback or two to your Reno history, despite having an obviously different timeline. Hope that's okay?
I also really know what you meant in comments elsewhere about characters who hijack stories. I'm got an original character who started out as not much more than a random barkeep and is now trying to be instrumental to the plot.
Speaking of which, I really need to go read Raith's story. I suspect it's going to make me very, very sad...
>>Also, Rufus/Reno fic I'm working on is including a throwback or two to your Reno history, despite having an obviously different timeline. Hope that's okay? <<
I have no problems with that at all, so long your source (ie, me) is referenced and a link back to this site is included. :-)
And I get to see it.
Yeah. Raith. The man does my head in, probably moreso cos I know what's coming.... /sigh.
I have links to Raith's chapters at the bottom of the Reno chapters it goes with (and I've put links back to the next chapter of Reno's, too, after each Raith ch). I was saying to a friend that I'd originally planned to have Raith's stand alone, but now in order to understand much of Reno's, it's really better to read them in order, almost like Raith's chs are another vp within Reno's.
Sure thing, once I get that story up online. I'm writing it as it comes to me, which is not entirely in order. First couple chapters are written, though, so I might post those up sometime soonish.
As for Raith, I probably should have been following those links to the chapters as they appeared, but as it is I've finished what there is of Reno's story and am now going back to Raith's.
On Reno's side at least, I feel like this has hit the point that all romantic plots do where I want to bash people's heads together because everyone is being stupid. Which is not a comment on your writing, but about the way people are stupid.
...*wonders what's coming* You keep saying these ominous things.

Hi Bethgael--
I'm not altogether sure that "general chit chat" is the correct category to be posting feedback/what-have-you, but since I can't make up my mind, General Chit Chat it is.
I am in angst over the fact that I haven't sat down and roughed out
"the book" I've been mulling over for years now.

Hey Cecelia,
Gen Chit is just fine.

Feel free to drop by often, here and at SS. :-)

Hi again!
...maybe if I don't get around to penning my book, I can just dictate it from my death-bed...you know...how they do in the movies. Of course, if one is long-winded enough to spout off a whole novel while in the throes of dying, maybe it's not dying, really.

Oh Dear Beth,
A frightening revelation--well, revealed itself as I glanced over at the desktop wallpaper...at dashing Reno...and it dawned on me that I have a thing for androgynous men. Must be the fine features or something. I caught myself wondering if I was latently gay...(and I mean LATENT...homegirl has always liked the XY species).
This goes all the way back to my young days and I was kind of besotted with David Bowie.
Oh my...the hair...but Reno is hella cuter.

Damn.
It can be our secret :-D
Right.

I try ;-)
