I found this on Ficwad and adore it! Reno is my favourite character from the film, (kinda hard to like him in the game seeing as you see him about three times) I'm addicted, more soon please!

Now I know why Reno and Rude make a good pair.
I loved this chapter. Thought it was funny when Rude was intrigued by Reno's idea of getting into the Shin-Ra intranet.
Reno testing Rude to see if he could read, was priceless.
However, the cherry on top goes to Rude. Placing Reno's beloved picture front and center. So very touching.

Thanks for the comment -- I've discovered I really like her, too. Of course, none of this part of the story is "agme canon", no one ever said how Reno and Rude met, or what their backgrounds are before the games start, but I was thinking on how they react to things, and I figured given that the Turks are, basically, murderers, but Reno and Rude aren't monsters, there must've been some sort of... something during their formative years that made them strong enough not to be monsters.

I could be wrong but I'm fairly certain they did... I may have just interpreted something you said wrong as well, you said he's not superhuman like Cloud, but I think he might be... yea this is pretty ambiguous seeing as I'm not really sure, which is why I didn't put it under complaints or whatever.... meh, just a thought really. Still love the story though :)

Hi, thanks for dropping by, and for your comments. I appreciate it. :-)
I have also read in some places that the Turks were mako-infused, but when I was doing my research for this story again, I realised that the only places I had seen this was in fanfics, so I did a bit of an investigation.
Nowhere that I have found, in any game reference, during the games (BC and FF), or in AC, is there any indication that Turks have been subjected to mako infusion.
Many reasons I came to this conclusion:
1. No one ever says they are, that I can find (I will of course be corrected if someone does find a reference).
2. Many times, it is mentioned that only Cloud can take out Sephiroth: the Turks can't. That's why they asked Cloud for help in AC.
The Turks actually shouldn't have been able to hunt down Zack, but the canon explanation is that he was able to be killed by the rank and file army (not the Turks, even!) because he'd already take a bullet earlier for Cloud and was therefore wounded.
3. Eye colour. Reno's are blue-green (depending on the shot in AC or the picture). Rude's are hazel (seen in AC when he loses his glasses). Tseng's and Elena's are brown (even in their original drawings for FF). The one thing that is always commented on in regards to mako infusion, all through all games (almost ad nauseum), are the signature vivid blue eyes such exposure gives the recipient, no matter what colour their eyes start out as. None of the Turks are ever mentioned as having that.
4. Time. Mako infusion takes months (according to FF). Yet, Elena was recruited to take over from Reno when he was injured fighting Cloud within a day or so, straight from Shin-Ra Military Academy.
5. It's the one of the Turk's jobs to "recruit" SOLDIER candidates, and not all SOLDIER candidates can make it, because they are not suitable for Mako exposure for reasons never exactly made clear. All of the player Turks recruited during BC are given military or criminal backgrounds, so they tend to be recruited on their fighting experience or morality.
6. In an interview with Nomura, he mentions that there was no way that Rude and Reno (or Tifa, for that matter) would have ever won against the Brothers in AC because they didn't have superhuman powers like Kadaj and the others had (quoted in the FF Ultimania). Likewise, during the game, they were always soundly beaten by Cloud.
So, while not saying I'm definitively correct, I'd say the evidence is firmly against it. :-)

heheh.. Yea I figured out where I read it, on wikipedia it says that Reno has been Mako infused under his entry but theres no mention of it under the others. The evidence the put there is his eyes are sort of mako blue, and that he takes a pretty bad beating from Kadaj with no noticable side effects... which is pretty bad evidence compared to yours, so I believe you lol. Does mean my stories are not as accurate as I'd like them to be though... damn :( Oh well, thanks, that will help me be a bit more accurate if I write any more :):)
Side effects? man I need to concentrate on what I'm writing and read it through... Basically he falls of a building and gets right up and fights, is I thionk what they mean, but his fall was broken by Rude so... lol yea I'll be quiet now...
Wiki's written by users (I could go in and change it if I wanted) so it's not always accurate.
The AC fighting, according to the creators on the extras DVD, was specifically decided to be "impossible" -- they wanted no limitations. If we were going to use AC as evidence of mako infusion, then we'd have to believe that Tifa, Yuffie, Cid and Barrett are, too (Tifa aaaalmost takes out Loz; the other three hang in midair to push Cloud up further to beat Bahumet). None of that actually agrees with the laws of physics, and supposedly that was deliberate.
AC is extremely internally inconsistent re Reno and Rude anyway: they writhe on the floor, unable to get up, for the entire scene that Kadaj is talking to Rufus, ther get up OK in seconds after that incident you describe with Rude.
Of course, in FF, Reno gets so badly beaten by Cloud that he ends up in hospital and they have no one else to turn to so they hire Elena. The FFVII team needs a continuity & consistency board, really. *rolls eyes*
As far as your stories, would love to read them if you feel like identifying yourself and letting me know where they are (although I may take a while to get to them so I don't cross-pollinate, so to speak). And, stories can always be edited. :-D

Yea, I know they changed it on wiki, and that it's notouriously unreliable, hence believing you over it. My stories are on ficwad and fanfiction.net, well, more like story, called "when your heart stops beating" I know I can edit it but I made it a fairly importnad part of the plot :( It's also a Yuffie/Reno so if you don't like that pairing you might not want to read it, although I'm writing another one that isn't... It also might not be that accurate cos I haven't finished the game yet (I'm stuck on it :S) I'm waiting for an update from you though :)
Ficwad's also been notoriously unreliable lately, so I'm thinking I'll post the Ev Cycles somewhere else - how is fanfic.net?
Don't worry, whether I "like" a pairing or not isn't going to stop me from reading/enjoying a story (I know some people do get cut about that sort of thing, though, so I understand your concern). As far as the mako infusion, I wouldn't worry about that too much either. Just 'cos I'm pedantic doesn't mean everyone has to be *grins*
There is another one coming, I'm halfway through writing Chs 5 & 6 (it's a pity that all of the first chapters are the ones I have to rewrite or write agains from scratch--with all of the other writing I have on the hop, and RL, it's taking me [i]forever[/i]).
But I won't be abandoning him, no way. So, feel free to tell your friends. ;-)
I'm glad new updates are coming soon. Yeah, Ficwad's server is screwed at the moment. Fanfiction.net is fine, although I find it more confusing then ficwad, but that's just me, and my friend prefers it to ficwad so I guess its personal preferance... It's true Fanfiction.net is working better then ficwad at the moment though.

You can also have him go out with Barret; I always wondered what would happen on that date, but could never be bothered trying to make it happen. Buuut, the mind boggles). Aerith is so.... I don't know; she always reminded me of saccharine.

For Imp & Faegirl's benefit, ACTF is a story I'm writing on Sexy Sims 2 (linked from "Bethgael's Spot") and Bryan Foley is the main character of another new story I'm writing there... because I'm, you know, like, insane, and stuff.
No, really...not too much credit. I mean, if you author a story and create characters, you are the Creator and determine personalities and background. Who's going to know if you run into a cramp?
However, it you take a rather well-known character, then you have to fill in a bunch of vague or nonexistent stuff without straying too far from "the rules".
Ya know?
I write a LOT. It's non-fiction. Thing is, I embellish it with my own observations and writing style. I can't recall what people say word-for-word but if it's close enough, they don't mind.
Most of the of my characters aren't even human. I do interpret
quite a few things they do and make them human, because I happen to think we we are more alike than different. We humans are not necessarily at the "top rung", the "chosen". We're just bullies.
Sometimes I pull things from...hell, the subconscious, but the thing is, it's MINE and I know it.
I think it's cool what you do. You give a dimension to characters that weren't there.
I bet it makes the game more intense for the people who play because they get more attached to the characters.
I really enjoy that (even if I don't play)...

It has been so long since I've had the chance to read Reno's Story...
...many things seemed to conspire against it.
But I logged onto SS in hopes of reading more of ACTF and was dismayed to find you weren't updating anymore...and my attempts to actually log in to the new place met with failure time and again.
However, I finally succeeded.
Did I ever tell you that yours was the very first fanfic I ever read? You started an addiction!
It was with much respect that I found myself catching up on Reno's Story...having sampled other fiction, some really very good and some that was outright ghastly. Thus I could actually use a reference point to appreciate your originality when it came down to the storytelling and details.
You have been able to flesh out Reno to something--or, rather someone--deep and believable.
And I thank the Five Gods of Wutai that he does NOT end every sentence with that two-letter tic. When others have done so, I've found it distracting to the point of feeling as if Reno either has Tourette's Syndrome, or perhaps is a parrot, who instead of saying "sqwuaaak!" at the end of every sentence, says "yo".
In other news, it's interesting to note that, although I've collected just about every expansion pack and most of the "stuff" disks as well, I haven't actually fired up TS2 in the better part of a year.
I blame it on fanfic...which, once more, I claim that you got me hooked.
Better watch out or EA games will be coming for ya!
Oh, one more thing...is ACTF still in production? I think I've followed every link, but have not reached the conclusion yet.

The Japanese we translate "yo" in the game to, is actually not a specific word (including "yo"). The game devs decided that "Yo" was the closest equivalent to this Japanese addition, which really just denotes a really, really informal pattern of speech.
Sort of like the difference between the use of "tu" and "vous" in French, but more pronounced.
I tend to see the "yo" as a simliar pattern as the one used in Dark Angel or by the young bloke in Prison Break, kinda Chicago ghetto. Not overused.
I reckon that Reno's speech patterns are informal enough for this story without having to put in the "yo" every five seconds, because in the Japanese, that's not what he's actually saying. Occasionally... and that one felt right. ;-)

Wow. Your Reno's pretty cool. He's really well-rounded as a character! I love how you took a minor character and created a realistic version of his past that makes sense! I enjoyed reading this a lot, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the installments. Please keep writing! ^^

I'm embroiled in RL projects atm, so poor Reno is on the back burner, but he shall be continued soon... probably vbery soon, as I've started dreaming of him again, which is a sure sign he's getting ready to nag me. Damn him.

First chapter. T_T That has to be one of the saddest things I have ever read, because it was so understated. Really beautifully written.
But, but, the helicopter thing! That made me smile.
You're going to be getting a running commentary from me whenever I finish a chapter, so you know. I am a lover of getting comments on my stories, and this thing is thoroughly deserving of many good comments.
Young Reno is great, and sounds very much like I think he should. A leader almost unintentionally, and with no particular motivation other than the small handful of people he cares about.
I loved the "I was winning, sir."
Also, I am amused by the fact that I am taking a break from studying for my finals to read about Reno not doing his schoolwork. The irony...
Up to chapter 4... Reno is winning over finals review in the battle for my attention. >.>
The very thought of trying something so brazen was... really, really enticing. Haha. Yes.
Reno and Rude, adorable from the start. I had really always wondered what the background for those two was. Since, you know, the common fan assumption of random fuckbuddies never sat well. They're friends, and I personally don't tend to think anything more. Their interaction is always priceless, though. This sets them up nicely.
...I am hopelessly addicted to this story now, I hope you know. I can't wait to see where this goes.

Up to Chapter 13. You are, apparently, a master of foreshadowing. I really feel like everything is about to go to hell but I'm not sure how. So many ways something could go wrong...
I am trying very hard to learn writing technique from this, because I've never managed to hold a story together over about 3000 words. And this is the kind of beautifully tense and often gutwrenching thing I would really love to be able to write.
...the multiple choice thing. You have just made that scene in the original game more poetic justice than it already was. Hahahahaha.

Hi, and thanks for your comment. I've had some bitsNbobs going on IRL atm that have put Reno on hold for a bit, but I have the next ch of Raith's aaaalmost ready to go, so hopefully I'll get to the new Reno ch soon afterwards.
Don't worry, I'd never give up on Reno's. Not until I can write The End on him. On it. On the story. Argh! Hehe. You know what I mean. :-D

I've read up to Chapter ten of this story. It was good so far..
But you seem to really be swaying away from Reno's character.
Plus--why is everyone always after Reno's goods?
It's like everyone and their dad wants to screw him.
I don't see much character constancy.
Probably the part that annoyed me most was when Rude was far more concerned about Reno being raped than his own mother. What was that about? I may not be a fan of RenoxRude, but I don't mind it-- but even that was too much. It went from feeling somewhat natural to you just forcing the two together.
It seems you're making male character's far too .. feminine, I think is the right word. In short, it's easy to tell you're a female writer because of how the male characters are being portrayed.
Don't take this as a flame, but more constructive criticizem (spelling?).

Are you able to give me an example of exactly what you mean? This is not a cynical question, more an honest enquiry, simply because your comment of how "feminine" the characters are is the exact opposite of most of my other feedback (here and elsewhere) -- and a "feminine" version of males is something I consciously write to avoid (so much so that there is an online writer site that determines if you write more "male" or more "female" and on a test this story made the programme think I was a male writer. As is "forcing" them together (I'd actively been keeping them apart!).
So, if you could clarify what gives you this feeling, I'd appreciate it.
As far as character consistency, it is difficult just because of what SE did to him--if you haven't read my "why I've written this in this way" you may like to do so to help understand why Reno is such a difficult character to write consistently without him going either whiny goth or sociopath. :)

I've been following this story for years. I was delighted to come back to it after a long while to see it had progressed so well. In fact, I believe this story is known in fandom as The Fanfic for Reno. I've read it all over again, hardly moving from my computer for three days. I think that you write beautifully and you've given life, personality and a heartwarming and emotional story to each of these characters. I have enjoyed it immensely and I hope that you decide to continue it again. I understand that you've probably fallen out of fandom by now, but I hope that play the game again on a whim and rekindle your love for it because is such a fantastic piece of work and it would be a travesty if you didn't finish it.

What a lovely thing to say, Sook. It's funny, because my friend Cvalh (the same friend who has written some great Sephy stories--see the front page) and I were talking about him today, then I popped on here on a whim and found your post.
I actually have 200 pages of story written already to go up, my degree (and some rotten health) got in the way this year, and I'm missing some in between bits (as well as needing to finish & post a new story about Tseng's background I started in 2010 that links in because my brain just works like that).
But.... "The Fanfic"? Really? I dunno about that, but that's sweet of you to say. I am just glad people still read. Thank you so much. :)

Are we going to see anything of Nunchaku (Male), Knife (Female) or Legend (Male)? I've heard about them so I was just wondering would you include them.
I have been following this story since 2007 and must say it is by far my favorite fanfiction of all time. I revist it at least once a year, always hoping to see something new has been added. Even when there isn't anything new, I always reread all the chapters. I really hope to see more from you soon.
I can’t take it anymore!!! Please give us the ending some day. It is torture reading this beautiful story over and over again. I’ve resorted to making up my own endings after I finish all of the chapters but I still hold on to the hope you will post again one day. Even though it’s torture, I thank you for what you’ve given us already.
